Application Areas of Rack Gears and Trends in Industry Standardization

As a key component for converting rotary motion into linear motion, the rack is used in a wide range of applications. In the industrial sector, it finds application in machine tools—such as the feed mechanisms of CNC machining centers—as well as in automated production lines for material handling and assembly, packaging machinery, printing equipment, and woodworking machinery. In the transportation sector, the steering system of automobiles provides a typical example of rack application. Moreover, in logistics systems, rack-driven automated conveyor lines enable the sorting and handling of goods.
Industry standardization is a key driver of technological advancement. Recently, industry-specific rack standards tailored to particular application scenarios have been released. For example, JB/T 15143-2025 “Limiting Racks for Continuous Tube Mill Units” was published in May 2025 and will come into effect in November 2025. This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Metallurgical Equipment and primarily establishes product specifications for specialized racks used in metallurgical equipment. This development underscores the trend toward greater segmentation and specialization within the rack industry.
