Sprockets are widely used in various mechanical transmission systems. Depending on their application, chains can be classified into three main types: lifting chains, traction chains, and power transmission chains, each with distinct sprocket application scenarios. Power transmission chains—both roller chains and toothed chains—are employed in general machinery for transmitting motion and power, typically at operating speeds of no more than 15 m/s; toothed chain drives offer smooth operation and low noise, making them suitable for high-speed applications up to 40 m/s. Specific application areas include agricultural machinery, automotive powertrain systems (for both commercial and passenger vehicles), construction equipment, and industrial machinery such as CNC machine tools and conveyors.

In recent years, driven by the trend toward larger-scale and smarter equipment, the share of non-standard sprockets in overall demand has risen markedly. Taking mining machinery as an example, non-standard sprockets are expected to account for more than 45% of the domestic market for transmission components in this sector by 2026. During equipment upgrades and retrofits, the conventional standard sprocket’s Grade 9 accuracy can no longer meet the requirements of higher-grade specifications—such as Grade 8 or even Grade 7—leading to issues like poor meshing and tooth skipping. Customizing high-precision non-standard sprockets requires attention to four key dimensions: precision grade (with Grade 8 or higher recommended); material and heat-treatment process (selecting carburizing and quenching or nitriding based on the operating environment); customization lead time (which leading manufacturers can reduce to 5–7 days); and after-sales support. For underground mines characterized by high humidity and dusty conditions, using stainless steel combined with surface nitriding can improve corrosion resistance by up to 35%.
