Analysis of Diverse Machining Processes for Rack Gears
The machining accuracy of a rack directly affects its transmission performance and service life. As a precision transmission component, the rack places stringent requirements on the machining process. Various machining methods are commonly employed; the choice of method depends on the required accuracy and production volume:
-
Gear Hobbing : This is a commonly used machining method that employs the meshing motion between a gear hob and a rack blank to perform cutting, analogous to the meshing action of two helical gears.
-
Gear Hobbing and Milling Processes : Hobbing is performed by the reciprocating motion of the hob. Milling, on the other hand, is carried out on a milling machine, with different clamping and indexing methods depending on the rack length and tooth type (straight or helical), such as controlling the tooth pitch via a dial indicator or an indexing head.
-
Finishing process : For high-precision requirements, gear shaving or gear grinding must be employed. Gear shaving is used to fine-tune tooth surface accuracy, whereas gear grinding is performed on gears that have undergone heat treatment—such as carburizing and quenching or high-frequency quenching—to eliminate heat-treatment-induced deformation and achieve superior surface quality. Gear honing is also a common finishing method, but its efficiency is relatively low.
